Dental Veneers: Are They Right for Your Smile?

1–2 minutes

Porcelain veneers can create a dramatic, long-lasting smile transformation in as little as two appointments. They are the treatment of choice for correcting discolouration, chips, gaps, and mild misalignment simultaneously. But they are also a significant, irreversible commitment.

What Are Veneers?

Veneers are ultra-thin shells of porcelain or composite resin bonded to the front surface of the teeth. Porcelain veneers are crafted in a dental laboratory from precise impressions; composite veneers are sculpted directly onto the tooth in a single appointment.

The Preparation Process

For porcelain veneers, a thin layer of enamel (0.3–0.5 mm) is removed from the tooth surface to make room for the shell. This is permanent — once prepared, the tooth will always require a veneer or crown. Temporary veneers are worn while the permanent ones are made in the lab over 1–2 weeks.

No-Prep Veneers

Some patients are candidates for minimal-prep or no-prep veneers (such as Lumineers), where little or no enamel is removed. These work best for teeth that are very small, worn, or set back slightly from where the patient would like them to be.

Lifespan and Maintenance

Porcelain veneers last 10–20 years with proper care. They resist staining better than natural teeth but require the same diligent hygiene. Hard biting or nail biting can chip porcelain. A night guard is recommended for patients who grind their teeth.

Who Are the Best Candidates?

Veneers are ideal for patients with healthy teeth and gums who want to address cosmetic concerns — discolouration unresponsive to whitening, chipped edges, small gaps, or worn teeth. They are not appropriate over active decay, gum disease, or severely misaligned bites.

  • The colour selected for veneers is permanent — it cannot be adjusted after bonding.
  • Composite veneers cost significantly less but last 5–7 years and are more prone to staining.
  • Veneers can be matched precisely to your desired shade before preparation begins.
  • Adjacent unveneered teeth may need whitening to match the new veneer shade.
  • Many dentists offer a trial smile (mock-up) so you can preview the result before committing.
