The reputation is based largely on decades-old experiences with inadequate anaesthesia. Modern root canal treatment is routinely described by patients as no worse than having a filling.

What Is a Root Canal?

Inside every tooth, beneath the hard enamel and dentine, is a soft tissue called the pulp — a network of blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. When the pulp becomes infected or dies due to deep decay, trauma, or a cracked tooth, root canal treatment is needed to remove it and save the tooth.

The Procedure Step by Step

Under local anaesthetic, the dentist drills into the tooth and removes all the pulp tissue using fine, flexible files. The canals are cleaned, shaped, and disinfected with antimicrobial solutions. They are then filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha and the tooth is sealed. In most cases a crown is placed afterwards to protect the restored tooth.

Does It Hurt?

With modern anaesthesia, the procedure itself is painless. Some patients feel mild pressure or vibration but rarely sharp pain. After the anaesthetic wears off there may be some tenderness for a few days, well managed with over-the-counter pain relief. The infection itself — which the treatment resolves — is usually far more painful than the procedure.

How Many Appointments?

Most root canals are completed in one or two appointments of 60–90 minutes each. Complex cases with multiple canals or severe infection may require additional visits.

Success Rates

Root canal treatment has a success rate of over 95% when performed by a skilled clinician on a tooth with healthy surrounding bone. Treated teeth can last a lifetime with proper care and a well-fitting crown.

Signs you may need a root canal: severe toothache, prolonged sensitivity to heat, discolouration, swelling, or a recurring pimple on the gum.

Delaying treatment allows infection to spread to neighbouring teeth and bone.

A failed root canal can often be retreated or referred to a specialist endodontist.

Antibiotics treat infection but cannot replace root canal treatment.

The tooth will be non-vital (no nerve) but structurally intact after treatment.

If your dentist recommends a root canal, it is genuinely good news — it means the tooth can be saved. Trust the process and the anaesthetic.

Few dental procedures carry more undeserved fear than root canal treatment.
